A SEASON OF BEAUTY

At Light of Hope, we believe our participants
should explore all of nature, what every season brings and how we are affected by each one.
How marvelous it is to relish in the offerings mother nature presents to us! Take a moment to appreciate your surroundings, breathe it in and allow your senses to bring joy to your heart!
Enjoy this beautiful poem, "October," by poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar.
October is the treasurer of the year,
And all the months pay bounty to her store;
The fields and orchards still their tribute bear,
And fill her brimming coffers more and more.
But she, with youthful lavishness,
Spends all her wealth in gaudy dress,
And decks herself in garments bold
Of scarlet, purple, red, and gold.
She heedeth not how swift the hours fly,
But smiles and sings her happy life along;
She only sees above a shining sky;
She only hears the breezes' voice in song.
Her garments trail the woodlands through,
And gather pearls of early dew
That sparkle, till the roguish Sun
Creeps up and steals them every one.
But what cares she that jewels should be lost,
When all of Nature's bounteous wealth is hers?
Though princely fortunes may have been their cost,
Not one regret her calm demeanor stirs.
Whole-hearted, happy, careless, free,
She lives her life out joyously,
Nor cares when Frost stalks o'er her way
And turns her auburn locks to gray.

WHAT'S HAPPENED

AVILA ADOBE MUSEUM
The participants of Light of Hope charted off to the Avila Adobe Museum in Los Angeles in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month!
The museum was built by former mayor Don Francisco Avila, serving as a social hub for his family and was later commandeered as a military headquarters by U.S. forces during the Mexican-American War in 1847.

Shoshana and Amelia welcome their peers in the program to Avila Adobe.

THE BEAUTY OF FALLING LEAVES

How beautiful and joyful is the raining of colorful autumn leaves as they drift slowly to the ground!
"Falling leaves mark the arrival of autumn and signal changes. As leaves shift from green to shades of red, orange, and yellow, they illustrate that change is both natural and necessary. This transformation invites you to reflect on your own life's transitions. For instance, starting a new job or moving to a different city resembles the shedding of old patterns. Embrace the beauty of these changes, they often lead to personal growth and fresh opportunities.
The act of leaves falling symbolizes release and letting go. As trees shed their leaves, they prepare for the winter, encouraging you to let go of what no longer serves you. This might mean leaving behind negative thoughts, relationships, or habits. By embracing this release, you foster emotional clarity. Practicing gratitude for the experiences you're leaving behind can also enhance this process. Consider writing down what you wish to let go of; this can help you find emotional relief and closure.
Falling leaves symbolize letting go, change, and the cycles of life. They remind us to release what no longer serves us, embrace inevitable transformations and accept life's natural rhythms."

THE AUTHOR'S NEST
Little Orphan Annie by James Whitcomb Riley
A Great Poem to Read on Halloween

Little Orphant Annie’s come to our house to stay,
An’ wash the cups an’ saucers up, an’ brush the crumbs away,
An’ shoo the chickens off the porch, an’ dust the hearth, an’ sweep,
An’ make the fire, an’ bake the bread, an’ earn her board-an’-keep;
An’ all us other childern, when the supper things is done,
We set around the kitchen fire an’ has the mostest fun
A-list’nin’ to the witch-tales ‘at Annie tells about,
An’ the Gobble-uns ‘at gits you
Ef you
Don’t
Watch
Out!
Onc’t they was a little boy wouldn’t say his prayers,—
So when he went to bed at night, away up stairs,
His Mammy heerd him holler, an’ his Daddy heerd him bawl,
An’ when they turn’t the kivvers down, he wasn’t there at all!
An’ they seeked him in the rafter-room, an’ cubby-hole, an’ press,
An’ seeked him up the chimbly-flue, an’ ever’wheres, I guess;
But all they ever found was thist his pants an' roundabout--
An’ the Gobble-uns’ll git you
Ef you
Don’t
Watch
Out!
An’ one time a little girl ‘ud allus laugh an’ grin,
An’ make fun of ever’one, an’ all her blood an’ kin;
An’ onc’t, when they was “company,” an’ ole folks was there,
She mocked ‘em an’ shocked ‘em, an’ said she didn’t care!
An’ thist as she kicked her heels, an’ turn’t to run an’ hide,
They was two great big Black Things a-standin’ by her side,
An’ they snatched her through the ceilin’ ‘fore she knowed what she’s about!
An’ the Gobble-uns’ll git you
Ef you
Don’t
Watch
Out!
An’ little Orphant Annie says when the blaze is blue,
An’ the lamp-wick sputters, an’ the wind goes woo-oo!
An’ you hear the crickets quit, an’ the moon is gray,
An’ the lightnin’-bugs in dew is all squenched away,--
You better mind yer parents, an’ yer teachers fond an’ dear,
An’ churish them ‘at loves you, an’ dry the orphant’s tear,
An’ he’p the pore an’ needy ones ‘at clusters all about,
Er the Gobble-uns’ll git you
Ef you
Don’t
Watch
Out!

Columbus Day, observed on October 13th, marks the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in America in 1492. This day also honors Native Americans and their courage in preserving their culture, language, traditions, and land. Both Native Americans and Columbus and his crew faced significant challenges in their efforts to protect their ways of life and forge new paths for the future.

Indigenous Peoples' Day is celebrated on the same day as Columbus Day. It celebrates Native American cultures, histories, and presence.
